Parks and Recreation

The City of Madeira operates three park facilities within the city.

Sellman Park

Sellman Park is a 10-acre facility located directly behind the Madeira Middle School. Between the school and the City property, it includes one 
baseball diamond, one soccer field, two lit tennis courts, playground equipment, a picnic shelter, basketball courts, picnic grove, concession stand, and a sand volleyball court.

McDonald Commons Park

McDonald Commons Parks, located off Dawson Road just next to the City garage, is a 17-acre facility that includes three baseball fields, three soccer fields, two tennis courts, playground equipment, a picnic shelter, a concession stand, batting cage, and wooded areas.   Created in 2005, the Madeira Veterans' Memorial is also located in the park.

Nelle V. Hosbrook Bird Sanctuary

The Nelle V. Hosbrook Bird Sanctuary is a 2-acre wooded area along Miami Avenue that has a short trail and picnic benches.


The City's Parks and Recreation Board plans many events throughout the year for Madeira residents and visitors to enjoy.  For details on any of the events, call the City Offices at 513-561-7228 or follow the City's  Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Springtime brings the Annual Easter Egg Scramble and the Memorial Day March.

Summer kicks off with the Wiffle Ball Program in June; the 6-week program is for students entering 4th through 9th grade. Also in June, the Parks and Recreation Board works with the Madeira Chamber of Commerce for the Criterium Bike Race. 

July brings the Independence Day Festivities with the Madeira Mile, parade, celebration, and fireworks. The Madcap Puppets and Shakespeare in the Park perform at McDonald Commons in July. To keep the summer fun rolling, the Madeira Swim and Tennis Club hosts a Splash Party for middle-school aged students.

Street dance

The premier event of the summer, the Madeira Street Dance, is held in August. Miami Avenue is closed for the evening and a live band, food trucks, and refreshments are served.


The Bonfire on the Ball Field is held in September with an evening of family entertainment.

The Costume Parade and Play Date is in October at McDonald Commons for families to enjoy.

All sorts of holiday fun arrives in December with Light Up Madeira, Santa's Mailbox, Pictures with Santa, and the St. Nicholas Sleigh Ride.

Light Up Madeira is the annual Christmas Tree lighting in Downtown Madeira. The festivities include carriage rides, holiday trees, and of course the "flipping of the switch" to light up downtown Madeira for the holiday season!
